Kazakh-American Free University won the competition цшершт the framework of a new Kazakh-British intergovernmental program "Newton - Al-Farabi" for the establishment of Professional Development and Engagement Centre in Ust-Kamenogorsk.

The Center will help build capacity of all participants of the events that will take place in the Center, and be a platform for a dialogue between business and science. Kazakh-American Free University is one of the first institutions of Kazakhstan to receive a "Newton - Al-Farabi" grant.

 The goal of the Professional Development and Engagement Centre is to support research activities in Kazakhstan and increase research effectiveness, provide training for researchers, scientific and technical personnel and research leaders. Professional Development and Engagement Centre in Ust-Kamenogorsk will act as the regional hub for East Kazakhstan and Pavlodar regions, providing access to researchers from all institutions in the region.

 The Newton – Al-Farabi Partnership Programme is co-financed by the governments of the UK and Kazakhstan, and will serve as a basis for expansion of cooperation in the field of research and innovation among governments, government agencies, research organizations, universities, companies and enterprises to support economic development of Kazakhstan. The Newton – Al-Farabi Partnership Programme is coordinated by JSC Science Fund, for Kazakhstan, and the British Council, for the UK.

 In his monograph KAFU President Yerezhep Mambetkaziyev said: "Kazakhstan has always been strong at fundamental and applied science, but the ideas often haven’t got any further development. Today, we must develop the science as a whole: from generating ideas to the commercialization of the end product of research. ... Creation of strong research and educational centers on the basis of the leading universities will help to solve this problem. These centers will train personnel for science. ... These centers will work in a close cooperation with academic and industrial research institutes, advanced industrial enterprises."

 Rowan Kennedy, Acting Director of the British Council in Kazakhstan, said: "The Newton - Al-Farabi Partnership Programme gives us the opportunity to use the experience of the UK in research and innovation in order to promote socio-economic development of Kazakhstan. We congratulate the universities, that won the competition and hope that the centers will make a significant contribution to building research capacity in Kazakhstan and creating efficient relationships between research communities of Great Britain and Kazakhstan. "

 Erkin Tazabekova, Acting President of "Science Fund" JSC, said: "Participation in large-scale international research projects with the possibility of integrating into international research community, is one of the main priorities of the Address of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to the people of Kazakhstan, and we, in our turn, make our best to give an opportunity for scientists and researchers from all over the country to participate in The Newton - Al-Farabi Partnership Programme, and, thereby, contribute to the strengthening of the research capacity of the country."

 Today KAFU is one of the largest private universities of international partnership in the Republic of Kazakhstan; it has modern facilities and highly qualified teaching staff. Two of the seven strategic objectives of the university determine the direction of the university research activities: "Creation of a system for integration of education, science and business" and "Creation of innovative educational environment in the University." Establishment of the Professional Development and Engagement Centre in KAFU will allow the maximum use of the potential of the university in this area.
